A 67-year-old grandfather has been sentenced to 36 months' jail for molesting his granddaughter, who was 13 years old at the time, on two separate occasions.
The man had earlier pleaded guilty to two charges of using criminal force on a person with intent to outrage her modesty.
Both the man and the teenager cannot be named because of a gag order to protect the victim.
According to court documents, the victim was living with her grandfather at the time of the offences.
The first offence occurred in June 2024, after the girl asked her grandfather to rub her tummy as she was feeling some discomfort.
The man lifted her T-shirt to do so, but ended up touching her chest about 10 times.
On Sept 23, 2024, the man and his granddaughter were alone in the flat when he molested her again.
The girl pushed him away and hid in a toilet in the flat, intending to wait for her father to return from work.
After confiding in her mother later that night, they made a police report on Sept 25, 2024. The man was arrested later that day and appeared in court on Sept 26, 2024.
He has been in remand since.
For molesting a child below the age of 14, an offender can be jailed for up to five years, fined or caned. The man cannot be caned as he is above 50 years old.
The prosecution had asked for 19 to 23 months' imprisonment for the man, and an additional four to five months in lieu of caning.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Shaun Lim said: "As the victim's grandfather, the accused would have been expected to provide a haven for the victim, but he exploited the victim's sense of security to commit the offences, not once but twice."
In passing sentence, District Judge John Ng said that if not for his age, the man would have been given 10 strokes of the cane on the two charges.
The sentence was backdated to the date of the man's arrest.
