The 67-year-old, who has been living on the seventh floor of the block for 36 years, said the two parties had been locked in a dispute over noises from the victims' unit.

"The man (attacker) is a sensitive person, he said he couldn't sleep because of the noise. He goes to bed at 8pm, so the other party seems to have caused some disturbance to him," Yong Poo told AsiaOne.

"Because the children kept jumping and disturbed him, he would take a hammer and knock on his ceiling."

He added that the alleged attacker once distributed a note to other residents in the block about the purported noise disturbance from the victims' kids and had lodged a complaint with the authorities about it.

SINGAPORE – A woman has died following a violent attack over a noise dispute between neighbours in Yishun on the morning of Sept 24.

She and her husband were among the three taken to hospital. The couple had serious injuries.

The third person taken to hospital was the alleged attacker, who has been arrested for murder.

A police spokesman said preliminary investigations found the fight arose from a noise dispute.

The alleged assailant, a 67-year-old man, is said to have used a knife to injure the couple.

The woman, a 31-year-old Vietnamese, was taken unconscious to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH), where she died.

Her 33-year-old husband and the alleged assailant were both conscious when they were taken to KTPH.

The police spokesman said the alleged assailant was arrested for murder and investigations are ongoing.

A spokesman for the Singapore Civil Defence Force said it received a call for help at Block 323 Yishun Central at about 7.25am on Sept 24.

When ST arrived at the scene at around 8.50am, there were eight police cars at Block 323 and drops of blood on the ground floor, near the lift.

On the sixth floor, there were bloodstains at the lift lobby.

A knife, a watch, a mobile phone, a set of car keys and a slipper lying on the bloodstained floor.

A knife, a watch, a mobile phone, a set of car keys and a slipper lay on the bloodstained floor.

The entire sixth level was cordoned off, with at least eight police officers present.

Bloodstains were also spotted inside the lifts.

A resident who wanted to be known only as Mr Koh, 69, said there was a dispute between a man and a couple who were neighbours.

He said: “At around 7am, I heard screams and a commotion, so I went to level six to see what happened. That’s when I saw a woman lying unconscious near the lift. She had wounds all over her body and was completely drenched in blood.”

Mr Koh, a business owner, added: “Her husband was trying to fight off a man who was holding a knife. At the same time, the husband was yelling ‘Anyone knows CPR? Please help my wife!’ Then I saw the husband get stabbed in his chest area.”

He added that as the husband scuffled with the alleged assailant near the lift, one of the neighbours quickly pulled the couple’s young sons into their flat and closed the door.

He said: “The husband tried to fight the man off. But the man grabbed the husband from the back and stabbed him in the chest area. Then another resident tried to split them up by taking the knife from the man and kicking it away.

“The husband was still conscious when the police came, but his wife’s eyes were closed.”

A resident who lives at Block 322 and who did not want to be identified told ST a woman had rushed to his block to take the defibrillator placed there.

He said: “I saw a woman in a panic, running from Block 323 to get the CPR machine. She said someone needed help.”

Photos of the incident showed several people tending to a woman in the corridor while a man covered in blood sat on the ground nearby.

Another photo showed a police officer speaking to a bald man sitting on the ground farther away with blood smeared over his legs.

The children are believed to be about two and five years old.

The entire level was cordoned off, with at least eight police officers present.

A resident on the ninth floor of Block 323 who wanted to be known only as Mr Ismail, 65, said the dispute appeared to be over the couple’s young children making noise.

He said: “The dispute between the couple and the man had been going on for years now. The couple usually keep to themselves, but I think the man was not happy with their children playing and making noise.”

Mr Ismail, who is retired and moved to Yishun two years ago, added: “I often see the mother taking her children to childcare in the morning. This estate is usually quite peaceful, so it’s a shock to us that something like this happened.”

A resident on the third floor, Mr Othman Omar, 64, said the alleged assailant liked to talk about his plants, and had just visited him at the weekend to chat.

He said: “I know the man as a person who cared for neighbours. He sent me dates during Ramadan and even gave my family essential oils after his visit to Saudi Arabia.

“I think most of the neighbours here are shocked at this morning’s tragic incident.”

Residents who spoke to ST said the couple have lived in the estate for around two years, while the alleged attacker has been living there for longer.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the men, who are neighbours residing at the said block, were involved in a prior dispute along the corridor. Arising from the dispute, the 44-year-old man allegedly injured the 53-year-old man with a knife.”

The 44-year-old man was subsequently found lying motionless at the foot of the block and was pronounced dead at the scene by an SCDF paramedic.

The police said they do not suspect foul play, based on preliminary investigations.

In photos of the incident, a blue police tent is seen erected on a grass patch on the first floor of the block, with the surrounding area cordoned off with police tape.

Chinese daily Lianhe Zaobao reported a female resident on the fourth floor saying that she heard a loud noise, and then saw an elderly man with abdominal injuries when she peered out of her flat.

The 53-year-old man was conscious when taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.

After the fight, the victim fainted, and subsequently passed away from heart disease in hospital.

Lim was placed under arrest the same day.

A report by the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) in January found that Lim had persistent depressive disorder at the time of the offences.

Lim was sentenced to 12 months' jail on Jul. 17,  reported.

Confrontation over collision at lift entrance

Court documents seen by Mothership indicated that the fatal scuffle took place at Block 805 King George's Ave on Dec. 22, 2024.

At around 11:25am, Lim was returning home after buying food when he encountered his neighbour at the lift landing on level eight, as both lived on the same floor.

As Lim was exiting the lift, he collided with the victim who was trying to enter.

Both were unhappy but went on their way.

However, the victim subsequently called his acquaintance, who did not know Lim, to accompany him.

The victim did not specify what they were doing but brought along a wooden stick.

The two then went to Lim's unit, where the victim confronted him about the collision.

Escalated into bloody corridor scuffle

Lim opened his gate and went out to argue with the victim.

When the argument escalated and the victim hit him with the stick, Lim ran back inside and got a knife with a 37cm long blade from his kitchen.

At around 11:30am, the two had a bloody scuffle with their weapons at the corridor.

During the scuffle, Lim slashed the victim several times, causing multiple lacerations, bruises and abrasions on his head, neck and limbs.

An autopsy found that he had died from ischaemic heart disease.

The scuffle had resulted in numerous blunt force and sharp force injuries to the victim, such as a 5.5cm incised wound on his forehead, a 4.5cm by 0.5cm incised wound that went through his nose cartilage and caused cartilaginous fractures, along with other wounds on his scalp, neck, and right arm.

However, the report found that these injuries were not fatal.

His acquaintance was conveyed to the same hospital to get his left forearm injury treated.

Meanwhile, Lim was brought to Changi General Hospital as he complained of chest pain at the time of arrest.

Lim was found to have sustained 1cm lacerations on his left eyebrow and left thumb, along with abrasions over his left forearm, left thumb and left knee.

He was placed under arrest later that day.

When the man's acquaintance tried to intervene, Lim swung his knife and injured his left forearm.

Sometime later, the fight ended.

The victim left and went to the lift lobby, but later fainted near the lift, as per previous reports.

Meanwhile, his acquaintance asked Lim for water to wash his wounds. Both remained at Lim's unit until police arrived.

When officers asked Lim for the weapon used, he initially showed them a different knife.

It was only after investigations revealed a bloodstained knife placed under the sink that Lim confessed that it was the correct weapon used.

Victim died from heart disease

The victim was conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital by ambulance, and was pronounced dead at 1:20pm.

An IMH report dated Jan. 23, 2025, found that Lim suffered from persistent depressive disorder, which had a mild contributory link to the offending behaviour.

However, the report noted that Lim was not of unsound mind at the time, was aware that it was wrong of him to take the knife, and had deliberately chosen it as a weapon for self-defence.

He didn't initiate the fight: Defence

Lim pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon.

Another charge of reckless conduct causing hurt was taken into consideration for his sentencing.

The prosecution asked for a sentence of 14 to 17 months' jail for Lim, noting that he had inflicted numerous injuries on the head and neck region of the victim using a dangerous weapon.

The prosecutor also argued that had the victim not been pronounced dead, it is likely he would have to undergo surgery for several of the injuries, such as those which incised cartilage and caused cartilaginous fractures.

In mitigation, Lim's lawyer argued that he was not a violent man and pointed out that he had not initiated the fight.

He asked for a lighter sentence for Lim.

In response, the judge noted that even though the victim had provoked Lim first over a trivial matter, Lim had overreacted and retaliated with a weapon despite knowing it was wrong to do so.

He said: "At around 7am, I heard screams and a commotion, so I went to level six to see what happened. That's when I saw a woman lying unconscious near the lift. She had wounds all over her body and was completely drenched in blood."

Mr Koh, a business owner, added: "Her husband was trying to fight off a man who was holding a knife. At the same time, the husband was yelling 'Anyone knows CPR? Please help my wife!' Then I saw the husband get stabbed in his chest area."

He added that as the husband scuffled with the alleged assailant near the lift, one of the neighbours quickly pulled the couple's young sons into their flat and closed the door.

He said: "The husband tried to fight the man off. But the man grabbed the husband from the back and stabbed him in the chest area. Then another resident tried to split them up by taking the knife from the man and kicking it away.

"The husband was still conscious when the police came, but his wife's eyes were closed."

A resident who lives near Block 322 and who did not want to be identified told ST a woman had rushed to his block to take the defibrillator placed there.

He said: "I saw a woman in a panic, running from Block 323 to get the CPR machine. She said someone needed help."

Photos of the incident showed several people tending to a woman at the corridor while a man covered in blood sat on the ground nearby.

Another photo showed a police officer speaking to a bald man sitting on the ground farther away with blood smeared over his legs.

The children are believed to be about two and five years old.

A resident on the ninth floor of Block 323 who wanted to be known only as Mr Ismail, 65, said the dispute appeared to be over the couple's young children making noises.

He said: "The dispute between the couple and the man had been going on for years now. The couple usually keep to themselves, but I think the man was not happy with their children playing and making noise."

Mr Ismail, who is retired and moved to Yishun two years ago, added: "I often see the mother taking her children to childcare in the morning. This estate is usually quite peaceful, so it's a shock to us that something like this happened."

A resident on the third floor, Mr Othman Omar, 64, said the alleged assailant liked to talk about his plants, and had just visited him over the weekend to chat.

He said: "I know the man as a person who cared for neighbours. He sent me dates during Ramadan and even gave my family essential oils after his visit to Saudi Arabia.

"I think most of the neighbours here are shocked at this morning's tragic incident."

Residents who spoke to ST said the couple have lived in the estate for around two years, while the alleged attacker has been living there for longer.

Physical crime has been on the rise with 75 knife-related incidents reported in the first half of 2025.

This is compared to 59 cases for the same period in 2024 and 131 cases for the whole of that year.

There were a total of 10,341 physical crime cases reported from January to June in 2025, compared to 9,809 such cases in the same period in 2024.

New laws were introduced in 2024 to tackle disputes between neighbours.

The Community Disputes Resolution Act was amended for a new Community Relations Unit to be established, where officers will be given investigatory and enforcement powers to intervene in neighbour disputes; and the Community Disputes Resolution Tribunals will also get enhanced powers to resolve cases brought before it more quickly and effectively.

A majority of disputes between neighbours are noise-related, with government agencies receiving an average of around 2,500 complaints every month.
